ABB distribution automation technology to boost power reliability in Shanghai

ABB has won an order from State Grid Corporation of China for a distribution automation solution that will help to improve power reliability in Pudong, a centrally located business and financial district of Shanghai and one of the country’s most rapidly developing areas.

ABB will supply distribution terminal units and feeder terminal units for the project, as well as on-site commissioning and after-sales services. The project will be executed by Guodian Nanjing Automation Co. Ltd (CNNPA), ABB’s joint venture with Nanjing SAC Automation Co., Ltd.

ABB’s distribution automation solution will enable real-time monitoring to optimize operations and maintenance. It also provides the capability of rapid recovery in the event of a power outage, enhancing security of supply to some of Shanghai’s landmark structures, including the Oriental Pearl Tower and the Shanghai World Financial Center.

“As one of the world’s leading distribution automation providers, ABB’s innovative solutions are playing a key role in the evolution of a smarter grid,” said Claudio Facchin, president of ABB’s Power Systems division.

“This project supports our push on grid automation as a key thrust area of our division’s Next Level strategy,” he added.

China is speeding up the development of distribution automation projects in the country, which is in line with its aim to build a stronger, more flexible and more efficient electric distribution grid. Once the Pudong project comes into operation, yearly power outage time will be less than five minutes.
